What can I expect from the BCG vaccination?

The BCG vaccination is given against Tuberculosis. In South Africa it is usually administered before you leave the hospital with your newborn. It is given in the upper right arm.

What nobody tells you is, at around four to six weeks after the vaccination a raised red spot appears, sometimes with a little blister in the middle. Most moms worry their child has been bitten by something but this is the usual reaction to a BCG and should disappear in about three months. The only evidence it was ever there will be a small white scar.

A pus- filled sore in the red spot is an indication of infection and should be seen by your baby's caregiver as it will probably require medical treatment so keep an eye on the vaccination site until it fades away.
